Personality is a way of thinking, behaving and feeling that make a person different from others.

A personality disorder is a type of mental disorder in which you have an unhealthy pattern of behaving and thinking. A person with personality disorder has trouble feel relating to any condition and people. This causes major problems and limitation in relationships, social activities school and work. Personality disorders are long term specimen of behavior and internal experiences which are different from cultural and social values of society. People with personality disorders have a hard time dealing with everyday problems. They usually believe that their way of thinking is normal. However they have a different view of life that is totally different than others.

Types of Personality Disorders

There are a number of personality disorders types. They are grouped into three clusters based on similar symptoms and characteristic. It is not necessary that a person have all types of symptoms that are described below.

Cluster A

It is characterized by unnecessary & odd thinking. They include paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal personality disorders.

Schizoid personality Disorder

People with schizoid personality disorder don’t have any interest to build close relationship. Usually they want to live alone. They don’t care about criticism or praise from others. They have inability to pick up normal social cues and have limited emotional expressions.

Paranoid personality disorder

People with paranoid personality disorder often assume that people will harm or deceive them. They don’t have confident about others to meet them or become close to them. They have a pattern of being suspicious of others. They have unjustified suspicion that spouse is not faithful to them.

Schizotypal personality disorder

People with this type of personality disorder have odd perceptual experience such as hearing a voice whisper your name. They believe that they can influence people and events by their magical thoughts. Usually they show flat or inappropriate emotional responses.

Cluster B

It is characterized by dramatic, over emotional or unpredictable behavior. It includes histrionic, antisocial, borderline, and narcissistic personality disorders.

Histrionic personality disorder

It includes excessive emotional, dramatically provocative to gain attention. A person with this condition can over think about a relationship with others is closer than they really are. They want extra attention from others.

Antisocial personality disorder

A person with antisocial personality disorder may disregard for other’s feeling or needs. He persists stealing and laying others. He repeated violation of the rights of others.

Borderline personality disorder

A person with borderline personality disorder is unstable and intense in relationship. He has suicidal behavior or wants to injure himself. He has intense fear of being alone. He often feels stress.

Narcissistic personality disorder

A person with narcissistic personality disorder belief that he is special and more important than others. He expect of constant admiration and advantage from others.

Cluster C

Avoidant personality disorder

People with this type of disorder often experience inferiority complex and avoid to participate in new activities or avoid to make new friends.

Obsessive personality disorder

A person with this type of disorder has overwhelming need for order. He extremely feels uncomfortable when perfection is not achieved.  

Dependent personality disorder

In this type of disorder people heavily dependent on others. They are afraid of being alone. They are unable to take decision of their life without help of others.

Treatment

Treatment may vary depending on the type and severity of personality disorder.

Some type of psychotherapy is effective for treating personality disorders.

There is not any drug approved for this type of personality disorder. However some type of prescription medications might be helpful in reducing personality disorders.

In addition some self-care strategies can be helpful for treating personality disorders.

  • Physical activities and exercises can help to release stress, depression and anxiety.
  • Alcohol and drugs interact with medication can increase personality disorder.
  • Don’t ignore medical checkup from family doctor regularly.
  • Write a diary to express your emotions.
  • Try yoga to manage stress.
  • Avoid becoming isolated. Stay connected with family members and friends.
  • Learn about your condition and express your feeling to your loved one
